One of the best things you can do to protect your computer is to have a router with a firewall.  If you have a broadband connection, this will allow your computer to be in a stealth mode.  Just having a software firewall on your pc will not usually accomplish this.

You need a firewall that will show stealth not closed to the internet.  If your computer is showing as closed it is still a door a hacker can knock on.  And, if they want in bad enough they can usually get in. 

Computer data security is also accomplished by keeping all the software on your computer updated.  Just about all you major programs like Windows, Office and others usually need updating from time to time. 

Microsoft releases updates to windows all the time.  The reason they do this is because someone at Microsoft or and independent person will find a loophole that needs fixing and is a security risk. 

If this person is a hacker they then spread the news over their hacker network and people then begin to try to surf for the computers with the risk. 

This is why you need to keep windows updated all the time if you are concerned about your computer data security. 

Just go into your windows control panel and make sure you set windows updates to look for updates everyday.  This alone is one of the best ways you can control your computer data security.

Also make sure you look at your other software to see if it needs to be updated from time to time.  If you are unsure about how to do this.  Call the manufacturer of your computer and tell them you are concerned with your computer data security and you need to know how to keep yourself protected and updated.
