How to setup a home network
|
|
If you want to learn how to setup a home network it
is actually pretty easy as long as you do not want to use a server.
First just take note of how many computer your
network will have or may have in the future. |
The simple home network you will be setting up is called an
Ethernet network. This type of network will allow you to share the internet,
files on each computer and a printer.
The first thing you will need to set up your network is a
router, which you can buy at any computer store. You will also need some cat 5
cables Aka Cat 5 cables unless you are using a wireless router. If that is the
case the wireless card will replace the cables. You will also need to grab a
Ethernet card for each computer on a conventional network.
This is what is known as a simple peer to peer network.
You will not need any network operating system to run this. The router will do
all the work for you.
Installing the network card.
Once you get everything home you will need to install the
network cards. Make sure you unplug the pc before you perform any work. If you
are installing a network card for windows 95, 98, Me you will most likely need
to use the disk that came with the card. Windows xp can usually find the driver
pretty easily.
Windows xp comes with a network set up wizard that you may
use to setup the network on any windows xp computers. This usually does go
pretty smooth. However if you are installing for windows 98 then you may need
to do a little tweaking. However windows cp does give you the option of
creating a disk win anything other than windows xp.
Once you get everything out of
the box it is then time to connect the router into the mix. You network should
look like this.
1.
Cable or DSL modem
2.
Router
3.
Computers
As you can see it is pretty
easy. The router connect directly to the cable modem and then provides access
for the computers within the home network. The router does also add another
level of security.
If you are having problems
with any computer on your network connecting then you will want to make sure the
computer has TCP/IP configured correctly and installed. Try running the windows
network setup disk again and see if you cannot connect again to the network.
