Someone buys a new computer and hooks up an
internet connection for the first time only to receive an email
a week later telling them they won the lottery.
To pick up their winnings all they have to
do is transfer a few hundred dollars to a bank in England or
somewhere else in the world. They fall for it and the rest is
history.
These scams are common place with today’s
internet. The trick to keeping safe is knowing what to look out
for. And it’s usually very simple.
With email only accept email from people
you know. If you receive and email out of the blue with an
attachment don’t download it. It could either be a virus, spam
or a scam.
If you chat online, never give out your
real name or address to anyone. Now, this can be hard if you
are trying to meet that special someone.
If this is the case we recommend chatting
with people for a while and then after a few months once you
feel comfortable, then exchange your information.
But, always consider the source. Never
just blindly give out your information. If you do you are
jeopardizing your security on the internet.
Last but not least, make sure you have anti
virus software loaded on your computer.
Viruses do happen today and if you surf the
net and download email you are at risk. If you are buying a new
computer for the first time make sure to ask for some anti virus
software.
If it doesn’t come with it then make sure
you go out later and buy some.
Bottom line, always use your head. Again,
never just blindly give out any information to anyone.
There are people who make a business out of
stealing information in today’s internet economy. Do not fall
victim to these scams.
If you take these precautions then you have
a good understanding of security on the internet.
